President Cleveland was diagnosed with cancer of the mouth in the summer of 1894, but the matter was kept silent as it was feared that news of the President's illness might have adverse effects on an already ailing economy. In July of 1894, President Cleveland boarded a private yacht in the New York Harbor to have his lower jaw removed. He was given a rubber replacement jaw which changed his appearance slightly.
